Description
The Winton Provisional School opened on the 10 August 1885 and became Winton State School on 31 May 1886.

Government Policy was to establish secondary schools where there was a perspective attendance of at least 25 pupils. 'High top' schools were set up in centres in cases where enrolments did not justify the establishment of a separate high school, and secondary departments were added to primary schools. Secondary education was provided at Winton State School from 1961.

The Winton State School regards itself as continuous P-12 (Prep to Year 12) with areas of special expertise, rather than sector-based. It has early, middle and senior classes, and most senior students in traineeships. Distance Education is offered in some senior subjects.
