Description
ESTABLISHMENT:

Mackay Central State School originally opened as a Vested school for both boys and girls and was known as the Mackay Primary School. In 1885, the school became a boys' only school and renamed Mackay Boys' Primary School/Mackay Boys' State School. This school closed 10 July 1932, to be replaced by the co-educational Mackay Central School which opened 11 July 1932.

The Mackay Central State School is also known as the Mackay Intermediate School.

The Mackay Central Infants State School was merged with the Mackay Central State School in 1968.

Throughout the school's history, it kept the school number '71', which was passed on to the new Mackay Central State School.
