The Bundaberg Police District was established in 1872.

In the 1970s, for administrative purposes the state was divided into police regions with the Bundaberg District, from 28 Jan 1971, included in the Central Region but from 1 Oct 1974 in the North Coast Region.

In 2001 Queensland is divided into eight police regions. Each of these regions is under the control of an Assistant-Commissioner responsible for all police activity within the area. The regions consist of a number of gazetted police districts, each under the control of an appointed District Officer with the rank of either Inspector or Superintendent depending on the size and population of the district.

The Bundaberg Police District comes under the North Coast Region, together with the Police Districts of Gympie, Maroochydore, Maryborough and Redcliffe.
