Ipswich State High School was opened in July 1951 as Ipswich High and Technical College. When Secondary Education was introduced in State schools in 1912, the necessary buildings did not exist. Consequently, the High Schools were established in the existing Technical Colleges and the combined institutions functioned under one Principal and with a joint staff.

However, on 1 January 1963 the Technical College section of the Ipswich High School and Technical College was officially separated from the main body to form the Ipswich Technical College, and the High School section joined with Brassall State High School under the name Ipswich State High School.
