Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
On 8 July 1950, the Burdekin River Authority was established under the "Burdekin River Development Act of 1949".

FUNCTIONS:
Under the Act the Authority was to: conserve water, mitigate floods, and irrigate lands by means of dams, weirs, channels, pipe lines... in the Burdekin River area; supply water so conserved for irrigation...; generate electricity by means of hydro-electric works in the Burdekin River area; supply electricity so generated for consumption.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
Under the Act, the Authority consisted of a Chairman who was the Co-ordinator General, the Commissioner of Irrigation and Water Supply, the Commissioner of Electricity Supply and such other members representative of the Commonwealth, one of whom was Deputy Chairman.

ABOLITION:
The Authority was dissolved under the "Burdekin River Development Acts Repeal Act 1980" to take effect on 1 July 1980.
