Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Following the submission of a report by Dr Derrick to the Secretary for Health and Home Affairs, and the planning of a Medical Research Advisory Committee, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) came into operation on 19 January 1946 with the proclamation of the "Queensland Institute of Medical Research Act 1945".

FUNCTION:
The Institute was established for the purpose of research into any branch or branches of medical science, particularly in relation to diseases in Queensland. Early research focused on infectious diseases. In 2002, QIMR had three divisions of research - infectious diseases and immunology, cancer and cell biology, and population and clinical sciences.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
QIMR is controlled and managed by the QIMR Council. The Council advises the Governor in Council on the appointment of the Director of QIMR who is responsible for research work and the management of research staff. In 2002, a Scientific Advisory Committee and a Management Executive Committee assist the Director.
