Arts Queensland was elevated to departmental status under the Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2001 on 22 February 2001. The new department combined Arts Queensland, a division of the Justice and Attorney - General's Department; and the Queensland Heritage Trails Network, a division of the Premier and Cabinet Department.

administration of cultural funding programs including the Regional Arts Development Fund and the Indigenous Regional Arts Development Fund
support programs for arts and cultural development
planning and development of cultural capital works program
management of the Cultural Centre
corporate support services to cultural statutory bodies and other government agencies

Arts Queensland incorporated: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit, Cairns; Public Art Agency; Queensland Heritage Trails Network; and The Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts. A Director - General was appointed as Chief Executive of the department.

Under the Administrative Arrangments Order (No. 1) 2004 and the Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 1) 2004, Arts Queensland was amalgamated with and became part of the Education and The Arts Department on 12 February 2004. Education Queensland and Arts Queensland continued to operate as separate entities, each headed by a Deputy Director - General responsible to the Director - General of the Education and The Arts Department. On 13 September 2006 the department became the Education, Training and the Arts Department. From 26 March 2009 responsibility for Arts Queensland was transferred to the Premier.

Under Departmental Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2012, as at 3 April 2012 Arts Queensland was amalgamated with and declared to be part of the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts

Under Departmental Administrative Arrangements Order (No.1) 2015, as at 16 February 2015 Arts Queensland transferred to the Department of the Premier and Cabinet.

Under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 3) 2017, and (No. 4) 2017 as at 12 December 2017 Arts Queensland transferrred to the Department of Environment and Science.
