Upon assent to the "Community Services (Aborigines) Act 1984", the existing Aboriginal Advisory Council was to continue as the Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council.
The Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council consisted of the Chairmen of each Aboriginal Council. In 1986 the Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council was expanded to include an additional member selected from the membership of each Aboriginal Council.
An executive committee was comprised of four nominated Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council members.
The Council was initially charged with advising the Minister on matters affecting the progress, development and well being of Aboriginal people; making recommendations on the same; and selecting members for the Aboriginal Industries Board.
The "Community Services (Aborigines) Act Amendment Act 1986" expanded the functions of Aboriginal Community Council to include establishing and operating businesses for the promotion, progress, development and well being of Aboriginals; and to legally act on behalf of any Aboriginal Councils if requested.
The "Local Government (Community Government Areas) 2004" dissolved the Aboriginal Co-ordinating Council.
