Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Police stations throughout the State were frequently used simultaneously as the local court house, police station, lock-up and residential accommodation for police officers. The return showing the strength and disposition of the force at 31 Dec 1872 is the first reference to the establishment of Charters Towers Police Station - including the Police lock-up - that could be found.

Under the "Act for the Regulation of Gaols, Prisons, and Houses of Correction in the Colony of New South Wales and its Dependencies and for other purposes relating thereto 1865", The Charters Towers Police lock-up was declared a public gaol, prison and house of correction, on 15 Dec 1888.
