The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Council was established under the "Queensland University of Technology Act 1988", as the governing body of the Queensland University of Technology. On 12 Mar 1998, under the "Queensland University of Technology Act 1998", the university was established as a body corporate, and the QUT Council incorporated a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to its official members, replacing the Director General of Education.
The council is the governing body of the university. It appoints the university's staff, manages and controls the university's affairs, property and finances.
The council consists of three official members (the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor and, from 1998, the CEO), eight members appointed by the Governor in Council, nine elected members, and other additional members.
