Description
FUNCTIONS:
The Environmental Sanitation Section monitored environmental standards and provided an advisory role to Local Authorities with regard to sanitation matters including:
- examination and analysis of water supplies
- surveys of the collection, removal and disposal of nightsoil, refuse and waste water
- plague prevention
- aboriginal health.
The Section had direct control in regard to paint, toys, cooking utensils, and injurious articles.

ADMINISTRATIVE ARRANGEMENTS:
1 November 1982 saw the establishment of the Brisbane Office which changed the role of the Agency. Staff developed expertise in specialised fields while all routine work was carried out at District Office level. However, the Department and controlled Divisions, Branches and Sections or working units did not have an administrative change of name or official function until the restructuring of Queensland Health which took effect on 1 May 1991, and 1 July 1991 when the Health Services Act 1991 was enacted and the Regional Health Authorities were created.

PORTFOLIO CONTROLLING:
Minister for Health, 1 Nov 1982 - 6 Feb 1986
Minister for Health and Environment, 6 Feb 1986 - 1 Dec 1987
Minister for Health, 9 Dec 1987 - 1 May 1991
