The Burke District Hospital, Normanton was established in 1889 to provide hospital and medical care for in-patients and out-patients. The Committee Rules and Regulations were gazetted on 1 July 1889. Under the "Hospitals Act 1936-1944", in 1945 the Normanton Hospitals Board took over responsibility for the Normanton Hospital and the Committee was disbanded. In 1991 all hospital boards were abolished and the Normanton Hospital became the responsibility of the Northern Regional Health Authority but from 1996 Authorities were dissolved and Health Service Districts with managers and District Councils to monitor services were created. In 2007 the hospital is within the Mt. Isa Health Service District and provides primary, emergency and community health services.
