The Land Board comprising two members was constituted under the "Crown Lands Act 1884" as a judiciary and administrative agency in connection with the occupation and use of Crown Lands.

The Land Board was empowered to determine questions arising from the administration of the "Crown Lands Act 1884" and to hold public sittings, known as Land Board Courts, to hear and arbitrate on such questions, i.e. compensation for land resumption, boundary disputes, land administration issues, for example, the confirmation of Land Commissioners' decisions, and to rehear cases as directed by Governor in Council.

The "Land Act 1897" abolished the Land Board and created the Land Court to which the powers and functions of the Lands Board were transferred.
