Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Following a general election, the Department of Community and Welfare Services and Sport was established by proclamation on 9 Jan 1975. Additional responsibilities transferred to the new Department were the Division of Social Work from the Health Department, probation and parole, activities of the Queensland Industrial Institution for the Blind as well as the Blind Advisory Committee.

FUNCTIONS:
Relief assistance
Financial assistance to youth and community recreation organisations
Social Work services
- identifying social needs and facilitatiing the development of relevant services
- specific services to:
the visually impaired
families of prisoners
handicapped people
Endowment schemes for surf life clubs and voluntary rescue organisations

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The Department had direct control of the Relief Assistance Branch and the Division of Social Work. Administrative support was provided to the following sub-departments: Department of Children's Services, Prisons Department, Sport Department, Parole Board, Chief Probation and Parole Officer's Office as well as the Queensland National Fitness Council and the Queensland Industrial Institution for the Blind. The Department was also respresented on the Advisory Committee for the Blind and the Inter-Departmental Committee for Welfare.

ABOLITION:
Following a general election, the Department of Community and Welfare Services and Sport was renamed the Department of Welfare Services on 16 Dec 1977, and control of the Department of Sport was transferred to another administrative area.
