Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Following the abolition of District Courts under the "Supreme Court Act 1921", the number of Circuit Courts was increased and the first criminal and civil sittings of the Circuit Court, Stanthorpe were gazetted to be held on 24 October 1922.

FUNCTIONS:
The jurisdiction of Circuit Courts was both civil and criminal, and the Judges were deemed to be Supreme Court judges on circuit, and not a separate inferior court to the Supreme Court. Under the "Supreme Court Act of 1921", and subsequent acts, the Supreme Court has criminal jurisdiction in the most serious criminal offences and civil jurisdiction in cases involving large sums of money.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The Circuit Court, Stanthorpe was within the boundaries of the Supreme Court, Southern District with the judge residing in Brisbane and travelling on circuit to Stanthorpe.

ABOLITION:
With the re-establishment of District Courts in 1959, the number of Circuit Courts was reduced and the Circuit Court, Stanthorpe was abolished on 10 April 1959 and the resitry transferred to Toowoomba.
