In January 1988 the Mapping and Surveying Department was officially renamed the Geographic Information Department to reflect the increased range of geographic information services provided by the department to both public and private clients. The goal of the geographic information program was to arrange the efficient provision of effective topographic and thematic products and services to satisfy the needs of the industry and the community.

Minister for Land Management, 25 Jan 1988 - 7 Dec 1989

The Geographic Information Program was comprised of:
Aerial Photography
Photogrammetric Services
Reprographic Services

As a result of a change in government in late 1989 the Geographic Information Department was amalgamated with Freehold Land Titles Department, the Valuer-General's Department and the former Lands Department to establish a larger and expanded Lands Department. Within this new Lands Department Geographic and Land Information, together with Technical Development and Computing, form the Information Division of the Lands Department. The Information Division was headed by the Surveyor-General.
