Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
In 1882, the sum of four thousand pounds was provided for a Trigonometrical Survey of Queensland, with the measurement to be undertaken using steel tape and accuracy being secured by a series of measurements done and a mean taken. This involved pushing on the triangulation as rapidly as possible until two points have been connected at, for example, four hundred miles apart at as close as possible on the same meridan. At each of these points the most accurate method for determining the latitude, the zenith telescope, was used to measure the arc of meridan between the observed parallels of latitude.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
This Trigonometrical Survey Office came under the supervision of the Secretary for Public Lands and initially involved the following staff -
Spicer Galland Briggs (Licensed Surveyor)
Robert Hoggan (Assistant Surveyor, Trigonometrical Survey)
Robert Mitchell Cochrane (Computer, Trigonometrical Survey)

FUNCTIONS:
Surveying
PORTFOLIO CONTROLLING:

Secretary for Public Lands 13 Jul 1883 - 12 Aug 1890
Secretary for Public Lands and Agriculture 12 Aug 1890 - 6 May 1896
Secretary for Public Lands 6 May 1896 - 12 Oct 1898
Secretary for Public Lands and Secretary for Agriculture 12 Oct 1898 - 28 Mar 1899
Secretary for Public Lands 28 Mar 1899 - 1 Dec 1899
Secretary for Public Lands and Secretary for Agriculture 1 Dec 1899 - 7 Dec 1899
Secretary for Public Lands 7 Dec 1899 - 1904

NOTE * :
By 1900, only one staff member remained attached to the Office. Although its functions had been absorbed unofficially by the Survey Office for some years, it was not until 1904 that the Agency ceased to be recognised in the Surveyor General's annual reports.
