Description
On 2 April 1906 Commissioners were appointed to inquire into the number of Pacific Islanders to be deported following the enactment of Commonwealth legislation, and to make recommendations regarding their repatriation to their islands. The Commission was also instructed to make recommendations regarding those "whose compulsory deportation would be inconsistent with humanity or good faith", and to consider whether there was sufficient labour for carrying on the Sugar Industry, and the best means of supplying the deficiency.

The inquiry held 40 sittings at 27 centres from Nerang to Port Douglas and heard evidence and spoke to witnesses representing government, farmers' groups and labourers. As well as its recommendations related to the numbers to be repatriated and the procedures to be followed in doing so, the Inquiry established criteria for exempting some Islanders from deportation, and made suggestions regarding labour in the Sugar Industry. The Commissioners' report was presented to Parliament on 30 June 1906.
