Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Under "The Insurance Act of 1916", to take effect from 1 February 1917, the State Government Insurance Office (SGIO) was established, replacing the State Accident Insurance Office which became the Workers' Compensation Department of the SGIO.

FUNCTIONS:
The Act permitted state insurance and SGIO became mainly responsible for life, fire and general insurance, and over time car insurance including third party cover. Responsibility for workers' compensation continued until 1978, and regulation and licensing of insurers was under the control of the Commissioner as part of SGIO until 1960.

ADMINISTRATIVE ARRANGEMENTS:
Under the 1916 Act the SGIO came under the control of a Commissioner, Branch offices were gradually opened and clerks of petty sessions operated as agents. This continued until "The State Government Insurance Office (Queensland) Act of 1960" and "The Insurance Act of 1960" separated the Commissioner's role from control of the SGIO to regulator, and the administration of the SGIO was undertaken by a general manager and deputy general manager. In 1971 a Board of Directors was appointed, and in 1978 workers' compensation was placed under a separate Board. On 13 April 1976 the SGIO Building Society was established reflecting a broader direction for SGIO.

ABOLITION:
On 1 March 1986, under the "Suncorp Insurance and Finance Act 1985", the name of the State Government Insurance Office (Queensland) was changed to Suncorp Insurance and Finance, an independent statutory authority whose staff were no longer part of the Public Service.
