Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) is a statutory authority operating within the Department of Emergency Services. It was established under the Ambulance Service Act 1991 on 1 July 1991, as a division of the Bureau of Emergency Services.
On 16 February 2015, this agency ceased to be the responsibility of the Health Department.

FUNCTIONS:
The Queensland Ambulance Service's principal functions are providing: public education, pre-hospital patient care, and specialised patient transport through subscriptions to the service. As well, the QAS provides free ambulance services under the State Government's policy covering pensioners/seniors and their dependants.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The Queensland Ambulance Service has permanent and honorary ambulance stations which are organised into operational regions: Far Northern (Cairns), Northern (Townsville), Central (Rockhampton), South Western (Toowoomba), North Coast (Caloundra), South Eastern (Beenleigh) and Greater Brisbane. These ambulance stations are supported by the Commissioner's Office and by the Ambulance Officer Training Centre.
