The Education Act 1860 established all the State schools at the time. Goodna State School (school number 45) opened on 1 February 1870.

The first head teacher was Miss Augusta Draper, who temporarily served at the school from 1 February 1870 until 31 October 1870. She was replaced by Richard Doran, who served from 1 November 1870 until 1876. The school was to serve what was then a large rural area between Ipswich and Brisbane. The original enrolment was 40 students but grew to 100 by the end of the first year. The school at that time was situated near the railway station and opened in temporary premises.

In 1873 a portion of the grounds was reclaimed for the Ipswich-Brisbane railway line, and again in 1922, a further area was taken up for the Warrego Highway. In that year, also, the school was relocated to its present site. A pre-school was added in 1975.
