Description
ESTABLISHMENT
The police lockup at Fortitude Valley was proclaimed a gaol on 4 Sep 1863 but it does not appear to have been used as such. Up until c. 1875 the gaol does not appear to have been used very often. It first appears listed in the 1878 Blue Book as a gaol but in the Second Schedule of the 1890 Prison Act it is referred to as a police gaol. In 1891, under the Prisons Act 1890, it was proclaimed to be "a public gaol, prison, and house of correction". By calling it a prison, Police could hold prisoners with sentences exceeding fourteen days without having the expense of sending prisoners to the mainland.

FUNCTIONS:
Prisoner rehabilitation
Punishment
Prison administration

PORTFOLIO CONTROLLING:
Colonial Secretary 4 Sep 1863 - 6 Aug 1896
Home Secretary 6 Aug 1896 - 17 oct 1903

ABOLITION:
The Prison was gazetted closed on 17 Oct 1903 and all female prisoners were transferred to HM Prison, Brisbane - Female Division.

NOTE:
It appears that the Prisons Department was using its own letter stamp from approximately Sep 1890 onwards even though it was not formally recognised as a separate department until 1 Jan 1891 when the 1890 Prisons Act came into effect.
