Description
Meteor Park Orphanage, near Stanwell, Rockhampton was licensed under The Orphanages Act of 1879 on 11 Dec 1885, and children were transferred from the closed St. Joseph's Orphanage, Mackay on 22 Dec 1885. In the years 1885 - 1886, Roman Catholic children were also transferred to Meteor Park Orphanage from the Townsville and Rockhampton orphanages.

Meteor Park Orphanage was charged with the care, teaching, and training of Roman Catholic children whose circumstances included death of one or both parents, desertion by parents, or neglect. The Orphanages Act of 1879 also allowed for the hiring-out of children for work for wages.

Under The Orphanages Act of 1879, the management and supervision of Licensed Orphanages were subject to such control as the Minister prescribed, including regular inspection. Government funding was provided for the care of each child.

From the late 1940s, Meteor Park Orphanage was known as St. Joseph's Home, Neerkol. By the 1960s, the Home provided primary education while secondary school students were placed in foster homes or sent to boarding school. The Home received government subsidies for capital expenditure while funding for children's care continued. With the development of alternatives to institutional care, the number of children in residential care decreased markedly in the 1970s. Government funding for St. Joseph's Home, Neerkol ceased following the year ended 30 Jun 1985.
