Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The National Parks and Wildlife Service was established under the "National Parks and Wildlife Act" 1975 which was proclaimed on 5 June 1975. On 11 December 1998, the Queensland Parks and Wildlfe Service (QPWS) was created by Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 7) 1998 as part of the Environmental Protection Agency, formerly the Department of Environment and Heritage.

FUNCTIONS:
Throughout its history the primary function of the Service has been the management of parks and protected areas, nature conservation, provision of recreational opportunities, and public education in conservation.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
In 1975, the National Parks and Wildlife Service was created by combining the Fauna Conservation Branch of the Department of Primary Industries and the National Parks Branch of the Department of Forestry. The Service operated as a sub-department under a Director responsible to the Minister whose portfolio included National Parks. However, from 9 December 1987 the Service became part of the Division of Conservation of the Department of Environment, Conservation and Tourism and subsequent agencies. In January 1990 this Division became the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service. On 11 December 1998 the QPWS was created by combining the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, Marine Parks and Conservation Strategy. In 2003, the QPWS had two divisions: parks; and, forestry and wildlife. Service delivery is through the Southern, Central and Northern Regional offices.
