ESTABLISHMENT: The Home Secretary's Office was abolished on the 5 December 1935 and the Health and Home Affairs Department created in its place. The Hon. Edward Michael Hanlon MLA, who had been appointed Home Secretary on 21 May 1935, was now appointed the Secretary for Health and Home Affairs. Most of the functions of the previous office were transferred to the Health and Home Affairs Department.
FUNCTIONS: Administration of a broad range of internal services including: Adoption, Ambulance , Cemeteries, Children's Services, Charitable Institutions Supervision, Chemical Testing, Civil Defence, Cremation, Dental clinics, Dentists' Registration, Epileptic Home, Willowburn, Fire Brigades, Firearm Licensing, Government Analyst, Government Medical Officers, Hawkers and pedlars licences, Health and medical services, Health Education Council, Homes for the aged and infirm, Hospital Administration, Immigrants, registration of, Indigenous Affairs, Industrial and Provident Societies, Liquor Licensing, Local government/authorities, Medical Professional registration, Medical Research, Mental Institutions, Nurses' Registration, Optometrists' Registration, Pharmacists' Registration, Police, Prison Administration, Public Health, Public Holidays, State Children, Tourism.
ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE: The functions of the Health and Home Affairs Department were divided into two broad jurisdictions. The Health and Medical Services Branch, alternatively known as the Health Department, had administrative control of health, medical and allied services in Queensland. Although there was no formal sub-department for the remaining functions of the department, they were often collectively referred as the "Home Affairs Department". The Home Affairs Department had administrative control over native affairs, police, fire brigades, state children, prisons, local authorities, tourism, and other functions not directly related to health and medical services.
The Health and Home Affairs Chief Office was located in William Street Brisbane. The day to day administration of the Department was managed by the Under Secretary to the Minister for Health and Home Affairs.

ABOLITION ;On 26 September 1963 the responsibilities of the Home Affairs Department were transferred to various agencies, and the office which had been in existence from 1859 with the appointment of the Colonial Secretary was abolished. A separate Health Department under a Minister responsible only for Health was established.
