Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Following a change in State Government in September 1963, the Premier and Chief Secretary's Department became officially known as the Premier's Department, under the Premier and Minister for State Development.

FUNCTIONS:
The Premier's Department was responsible for the following:
Co-ordination of government administration and state development
Commissions/Instruments under State Seal
Correspondence with other Governments
Justices of the Peace (to end 1975)
Legislation
Letters Patent
Public Service Administration

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
In its Annual Report of 1986-1987, the Premier's Department structure was as follows: the executive consisted of the Co-ordinator General, to whom the Public Relations and Media Office, Parliamentary Counsel, Agent-General (London), Commissioner (Tokyo), and Commissioner (Los Angeles) were directly responsible. Under the Co-ordinator General were the Secretary for the Office of State Affairs, the Director of the Policy Division, and the Director of the State Development Division. The Department was further sub-divided into numerous branches. These branches had remained virtually unchanged since 1963, with the exception of the Department's loss of jurisdiction over the Public Accountants Registration Board, the Public Service Superannuation Board and appointments to Justices of the Peace (Justices of the Peace Act No51 of 1975 transferred this function to Justice Department).
