Under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 3) 2017, the Department of Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games was renamed and established as the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games on the 12 December 2017, assuming responsibility for matters relating to tourism, major events and the Commonwealth Games, with the exception of the Office of Small Business previously undertaken by the former department. The department also assumed responsibility for Innovation (and the corporate and executive services), and effective from the 21 December 2017, the Contract and Investment Management Unit of Science Development (and the corporate and executive services), both transferred from the former Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation, and integrated resort developments and global tourism hubs from the former Department of State Development.
As at 21 December 2017, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 4) 2017, the functions of the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games are as follows:
Entrepreneurship policy and programs
Innovation policy, strategy, programs and evaluation
Integrated resort developments and global tourism hubs
Policy, strategy and programs for tourism industry development
Tourism investment attraction including island resort developments
Tourism marketing and promotion
