Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
In January 1988 the Mapping and Surveying Department was officially renamed the Geographic Information Department. The name change reflected the increased range of geographic information services provided by the department to both public and private clients.

FUNCTIONS:
Geographic information is scientific, technical and general information about the earth and its surface and composition, the ocean and the atmosphere. Land information relates to the tenure and boundary components of geographic information.

The Geographic Information Department was established to:
provide a geographic and cadastral information service
develop the geographic information industry
advise the government on surveying and mapping policies

The Department's primary functions were:
provision of geographic and cadastral information, for example, topographical maps, aerial photographs, client project mapping services and reprography.
promotion of the geographic information industry, for example, the promotion of the Department's services at World Expo 1988 and participation in other public events; place names and historical services; the publication of standard series maps; and the publication of tourist recreational maps.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The functions and activities of the Geographic Information Department were developed into a series of Corporate Programs. The District Offices became Regional Offices in line with the regional thrust of the State Government's 'Quality Queensland Strategy'. The shop front marketing approach was introduced to regional offices through the introduction of 'Sunmap Centres' and business expanded to South East Asia.

The Department also controlled and supervised the following agencies
Surveyors Board of Queensland
Queensland Place Names Board
Queensland Place Names Committee
Survey and Technical Advisory Committee
Committee of Enquiry into Surveying
National Mapping Council
Land Management Research Centre (LANDMARC)
Sunmap Technology Centre

As a result of a change in government in late 1989 the Geographic Information Department was amalgamated with Freehold Land Titles Department, the Valuer-General's Department and the former Lands Department to establish a larger and expanded Lands Department.
