Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
The General Medical Council of Australia was founded at a conference of presidents of medical boards on 19 March 1963.

FUNCTIONS:
The object of the Council was "to bring about uniform conditions relating to medical practice in the States and Territories of the Commonwealth." To this end, the Council's primary function was to inquire into and make recommendations to the Commonwealth and States on medical graduation standards, requirements for registration of medical practitioners, conditions governing registration of medical practitioners from overseas and any other relevant matters.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
Membership of the Council consisted of the Chairman or President of each of the State and Territory medical boards.

ABOLITION:
The Council ceased to exist after its Fourth Annual General Meeting, held on 23 June 1967.
