The board was established under the Psychologists Act 1977 and proclaimed in the Government Gazette on 16 December 1978. It commenced operation on 1 January 1979.

Maintain and distribute registrations of psychologists including: qualifications, provisional registrations, licence fees, removal of names from register, disciplinary action, and appeals.

The board consisted of seven members which were appointed by the the Governor in Council. Four of the members were appointed by the minister of which at least one had to be a Psychologist.

The Health Practitioner Registration Boards (Administration) Act 1999 was enacted to help in the administration of the various health practitioners boards in Queensland. From 1 July 2010 the Psychologists Board of Queensland was abolished and a new national agency, the Australian Health Practitioner Registration Agency, responsible for administration of registration of health professionals was introduced under the "Health Practitioner Regulation (Administrative Arrangements) National Law Act 2008", the "Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009" and the "Health Legislation (Health Practitioner Regulation National Law) Amendment Act 2010". The National Agency took over the administrative functions of the Board while the Psychologists Board of Australia took over the registration and accreditation of Psychologists.
