The board was established under the Chiropractor and Osteopaths Act 1979. The board was announced in the Government Gazette on 1 September 1979 and began functioning on 30 August 1979.

Maintain and distribute registrations of Chiropractors and Osteopaths including: qualifications, provisional registrations, licence fees, removal of names from register, disciplinary action, and appeals. The Chiropractic Manipulative Therapists Act Amendment Act 1988, No 3, substituted the words "Chiropractic Manipulative Therapists" with the term "Chiropractors and Osteopaths" and any previous acts were to be refered to using the substituted term.

The board consisted of seven members which were appointed by the the Governor in Council. Four of the members were appointed by the minister of which at least one had to be a Chiropractor or Osteopath.

The Health Practitioner Registration Boards (Administration) Act 1999 was enacted to help in the administration of the various health practitioners boards in Queensland. The Chiropractors and Osteopath Board was abolished under the Chiropractors Registration Act 2001 and the Osteopath Registration Act 2001.
