Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
On 3 April 2012, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 1) 2012, the Department of Public Works was restructured and renamed the Department of Housing and Public Works. As part of the restructure the Centre for Information Technology and Communications (CITEC) and the Queensland State Archives were transferred to the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts. The Department gained public housing services and the Residential Services Unit from the former Department of Communities.

On 16 February 2015, under the Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2015, this Department continued to operate under the same name and previous responsibilities, except for the function of Protective Services, which was transferred to the Public Safety Business Agency.

On 12 December 2017 under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notices (No. 3), the Department continued to operate under the same name, with the additional responsibilities of Sport and Recreation transferred from the Department of National Parks, Sport and Parks, and Smart Service Queensland, Queensland Shared Services, Queensland State Archives, Strategic ICT including CITEC, open data, digital economy policy and collaboration, transferred from the former Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation.


FUNCTIONS:
As at 21 December 2017, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 4) 2017 , the functions of the Department of Housing and Public Works are as follows:

Government purchasing (including electronic procurement)

Licensing and regulation of the Queensland building industry
Licensing of plumbers and drainers
Queensland home warranty insurance scheme
Professional practices and registration of professional engineers and architects

Property facilities management and property related services for government including -
-Design, construction and maintenance
-Project management
Registration of retirement villages
Regulation of accommodation services - boarding houses and residential parks
Urban Design and Government Architect (transferred to Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning from 12 December 2017)

Note: Protective Services transferred to the Public Safety Business Agency on 16 February 2015
