The Mackay Hospitals Board was constituted under the "Hospitals Act of 1923" and established by Gazette notice on 23 December 1925. The first election for Board members was held on 6 February 1926. Areas covered included the city of Mackay and the Shires of Mirani, Nebo, Pioneer and Sarina.

The Board was charged with the maintenance, management and regulation of all hospitals within its geographical boundary.

The membership of the board was determined by:
a) the election of 3 members by the contributors to any hospital within the district
b) the appointment of 3 members by the Governor in Council
c) the election of 3 members by Local Authorities according to the following formula: the Mackay City Council elected 1 member; the Pioneer Shire Council elected 1 member; the councils of the Shires of Mirani, Nebo and Sarina elected 1 member.

Home Secretary, 23 Dec 1925 - 5 Dec 1935
Secretary for Health and Home Affairs, 5 Dec 1935 - 12 Aug 1957
Minister for Health and Home Affairs, 12 Aug 1957 - 26 Sep 1963
Minister for Health, 26 Sep 1963 - 1 Jul 1991

Under the "Health Services Act 1991" Hospital Boards were abolished and replaced by the regional authorities. Hospital administration in the Mackay area became the responsibility of the Mackay Regional Health Authority.
