An Ipswich branch office of the Public Curator was established from approximately 1977.

The chief duty of the Public Curator related to the administration of deceased estates. The Public Curator could be appointed a trustee, executor, administrator, guardian, attorney, liquidator, receiver etc of trusts and estates.
The duties of the Public Curator Office also included administration of:
unclaimed assets
mentally ill persons, prisoners, persons in charitable institutions and protected persons' estates
legal advice and services for disadvantaged persons and representation for workers' compensation

The "Public Trustee Act 1978" was "an act to change the name and style of the The Public Curator of Queensland to that of The Public Trustee of Queensland", and came into effect from 1 January 1979.
