The first surgeon was appointed to the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement on 7 September 1825 (1) and the hospital was completed in early 1827. The hospital treated prisoners and military personnel and their families as out-patients or in-patients. With the end of penal settlement and the opening of Moreton Bay to free settlement from February 1842, the hospital continued to operate and commenced treatment of all persons although free settlers were charged a fee if they were not deemed to be paupers. The convict hospital was finally closed in January 1848 (2).
