Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
On 24 June 1982, part of the North Brisbane Hospitals Board's district was constituted as the Royal Children's Hospital District and the Royal Children's Hospital Board was established to administer the hospital.

FUNCTIONS:
The Board's primary functions were to establish clear objectives and policy for the administration of the hospital as well as undertaking re-development of the hospital and other works' projects, responsibility for medical staff appointments and hospital finances including fund-raising.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The Board comprised 5 members including a Chairman and a representative of the Local Authority, and established sub-committees to undertake administrative projects.

ABOLITION
The "Health Services Act 1991" provided for the dissolution of Hospital Boards and their replacement with Regional Health Authorities from 1 July 1991.

HISTORICAL NOTE:
The Royal Children's Hospital was originally known as the Hospital for Sick Children which opened on 11 March 1878, was renamed the Brisbane Children's Hospital on 21 October 1943, and became the Royal Children's Hospital in 1967.
