Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
Under the "District Courts Act 1958", District Courts were reintroduced in 1959 after abolition under the "Supreme Court Act 1921". Bowen was proclaimed a place to hold a District Court on19 March 1959, and a District Court judge was assigned on 2 April 1959.

FUNCTIONS:
Under the "District Court of Queensland Act 1967", the District Court holds criminal jurisdiction generally for cases where the maximum term of imprisonment is less than 14 years, and civil jurisdiction where a dispute involves an amount over $50,000 but less than $250,000. Appeals may be heard from the Magistrates Courts while appeals from the District Court are to the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court. The Children's Court of Queensland is a District Court and the Planning and Environment Court is also part of the District Court.

Between 1922 and 1959, the Supreme Court took on some functions of the District Courts.

ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE:
The "District Courts Act 1958" prescribed that where a Central Registry or District Registry of the Supreme Court exists in a city or town, such Central Registry or District Registry as the case may be shall be a District Court Registry. The District Court, Bowen, covered the Petty Sessions districts of Bowen, Collinsville and Proserpine. Under the District Court Regulation 2005, the Magistrates Court district of Bowen is the District Court district.
