The Mackay Hospital was established by the Mackay Hospital Committee in approximately 1871. The hospital has been known also as the Mackay District Hospital and currently the Mackay Base Hospital.

To provide inpatient and outpatient hospital and medical care. The hospital also offers clinic, specialist and outreach services.

A local Hospital Committee initially administered the hospital. The Rules and Regulations of the Hospital Committee were gazetted on 18 January 1872.

Under the "Hospitals Act 1923" the Committee was replaced by the Mackay Hospitals Board which was responsible for the administration of hospitals in the Mackay District from 23 December 1925.

Under the "Health Services Act 1991", from 1 July 1991 all Hospital Boards were abolished and the Mackay Hospital became the responsibility of the Mackay Regional Health Authority. Since 1996 the Mackay Hospital has been part of the Mackay Health District under a district manager and monitored by a Council.
