Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
On 26 February 2004, under the Administrative Arrangements Amendment Order (No.2) 2004, and the Public Service Departmental Arrangement Notice (No.2) 2004, the Department of Local Government and Planning was renamed the Department of Local Government, Planning, Sport and Recreation. On 13 September 2007, under the Administrative Arrangements Oder (No. 2) 2007 and the Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 4) 2007 the Department was renamed the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation.

FUNCTIONS:
The Department has responsibility for:
Local Government including:
Aboriginal and Island Councils - from 1 July 2004
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Infrastructure
Land Use Planning - to 13 Sep 2007
Building and Plumbing Standards - to 21 Sep 2007
Licensing of Plumbers and Drainers - to 21 Sep 2007
Regional and rural communities - from 21 Sep 2007

Sport and Recreation including:
major sporting events
sports facilities
sports drug testing
sport and recreation development programs
Natural Resource recreation and education

Racing Division - from 13 Sep 2006 to 13 Sep 2007

Women's Policy and Women's Infolink - to 13 Sep 2006

Urban Growth - to 1 Jan 2006

ABOLITION:
On 26 March 2009, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2009, the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation was abolished, its sport and recreation functions transferred to the Department of Communities, and other functions to the Department of Infrastructure and Planning.
