Description
ESTABLISHMENT:
On 12 February 2004, under Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 2004 and Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No.1) 2004, the Department of Families was abolished and its functions transferred to two newly-created departments: the Department of Communities, and the Department of Child Safety. From 26 March 2009, the Department of Communities absorbed the functions of the abolished Departments of Child Safety, Disability Services, and Housing, as well as the sport and recreation functions of the previous Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation.

FUNCTIONS:
Responsibility for former Department of Families functions excluding Child Protection Branch:
Family Support Unit (formerly part of Child Protection Branch) - from 16 Sep 2004
Office of Rural Communities transferred from the Department of Primary Industries - to 21 Sep 2007
Smart Services Queensland transferred from State Development - to 26 Mar 2009

Functions transferred from former Department of Families:
Administration of community services for :
regional and rural communities - to 21 Sep 2007
seniors
the homeless and disadvantaged
children including adoptions and child care
families in crisis including domestic violence
Youth Justice programs
Youth Support and Prevention Programs and Centres

Office of Youth Affairs (transferred from Employment and Training - from 20 May 2004)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Policy, Rights and Culture - from 13 Sep 2006

Former Health Department functions transferred from 13 Sep 2006:
