On 26 February 1996, under Public Service Management and Employment (Departmental Changes) Order (No. 2), the Department of Main Roads was separated from the Department of Transport which retained responsibility for overall transport planning and coordination. 'Queensland Transport' was adopted as the trading name for the Department of Transport.

Departmental responsibilities were established by Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 2) 1996, with responsibility for Trade Development transferred to the department in 2007:

Air services
Land Transport and safety
Transport Infrastructure
Trade Development (from 13 Sep 2007)

The Department of Transport was responsible for the delivery of a variety of Programs: Transport Planning & Coordination; Land Transport & Safety; Public Transport; Maritime; Corporate Services; Client Services, and from 13 September 2007 the Trade and International Operations Division (excluding International Collaborations).

On 26 March 2009, under Public Service Departmental Arrangements Notice (No. 2) 2009, the Transport Department was abolished and its functions transferred to the Transport and Main Roads Department.
