Brisbane Municipality was declared a city under the Local Authorities Act of 1902, Pt 2, S10. The Act took effect on 31 March 1903.
The City of Brisbane Act of 1924 provided Brisbane with a liberal charter of self government. Under the Act, the area governed by the Brisbane City Council was increased as the following local authorities were amalgamated with Brisbane:-
- City of South Brisbane
- Towns of Hamilton, Ithaca, Toowong, Windsor, Sandgate, and Wynnum
- Shires of Balmoral, Belmont, Coorparoo, Enoggera, Kedron, Moggill, Sherwood, Stephens, Taringa, and Toombul and,
- Parts of the Shires of Tingalpa and Yeerongpilly
