European settlement was first established in the Brisbane region with the Moreton Bay penal settlement in the 1820s. By 1842, the penal settlement at Moreton Bay was closed and free settlement in the region was encouraged. Following the separation of Queensland and New South Wales in 1859, Brisbane was declared a municipality and became the capital of Queensland. This exhibition highlights some of the changes over time to the streets and buildings of Brisbane City.
